The Gold Coast Bulletin reports…

“Two men accused of king hitting a random Surfers Paradise tourist were visiting the Gold Coast for a church camp, a court has heard.

Amanaki Kilisimasi Kaufusi, 21, and Onesi Filimoetaufa Taufui, 18, are each charged with grievous bodily harm and were today refused bail in the Southport Magistrates Court.

Police have alleged that around 3.15am on Sunday they attacked 24-year-old Onyekachi Okoye as he walked through Cavill Mall.

It is alleged Kaufusi boasted to friends in Tongan about his desire to hit someone.

Minutes later he punched a random man to the face, immediately knocking him unconscious.

While he was on the ground Kaufusi, in company with Taufui, allegedly stomped on the man’s face breaking his jaw.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Chris Lynch said the victim was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital, put in a coma but had shown no signs of brain injury.

Sgt Lynch said Kaufusi and Taufui were intercepted when they tried to escape Surfers Paradise by catching a taxi back to a church camp at Tallebudgera.

Magistrate Brian Kilmartin refused bail, fearing they were a risk of re-offending and fleeing Queensland.

“The court is also concerned about the possible deterioration of the health of the victim,” he said.

The men were remanded in custody and will return to court on February 26.”
