Pastor accused of wife’s murder – updated*

WIAT reports…

“Attorneys for the Homewood pastor accused of killing his wife waived the right to a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

The case will now head to a grand jury.

Shahan was arrested at Nashville International Airport by Homeland Security ICE agents on January 1, 2014 after Homewood police issued a warrant for his arrest on Dec. 31, 2013.

He’s charged with murder in connection with the death of his wife, Karen Shahan, who was found dead inside the family’s home on July 23, 2013.

Shahan was released from jail and ordered to stay at his mother’s home and wear an electronic monitoring bracelet on his leg.

One of Shahan’s defense attorneys, John Lentine, says the case was headed for a grand jury either way.

According to Lentine, a case can wind up in a grand jury whether a judge finds probable cause at a hearing.

By avoiding the hearing, Lentine says his client avoided the possibility of having to go through being rearrested and rebounded for the same outcome.

The judge ordered Shahan to remain under electronic monitoring, and his bond remains fixed at $100,000.

The prosecution declined to comment.

“[Shahan] is in good spirits. We love him, support him and we’re praying for him. In the end, God will be glorified,” said Ken Phillips, the pastor of Oak Mountain Baptist Church.”
