The uncanny resemblance of Pastor Terry Jones to Yosemite Sam – updated*

The Ledger reports…

“Moments after his lawyer secured an extension in his criminal case in court Tuesday, Florida pastor Terry Jones told reporters outside the courtroom he has every intention of returning to Polk County this September to burn Qurans, the Muslim holy book, in remembrance of Americans who died in terrorist attacks.

“We plan to return to Polk County for our next Sept. 11 event to complete what we started,” said Jones, the controversial Bradenton minister whose protests against Muslims have attracted international attention.

Jones, 62, was arrested in Mulberry last Sept. 11 on his way to burn 2,998 Qurans at a nearby county-owned park. The date marked the 12th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania, and Jones planned to burn one holy book for each American victim of those attacks.

He’s pleaded not guilty to charges of the unlawful conveyance of fuel for pulling a cooker on a trailer filled with kerosene-soaked Qurans, and for openly carrying a firearm. Both charges are felonies, punishable by up to five years in prison.

Lawyers for the state and Jones told Circuit Judge Roger Alcott on Tuesday they’re continuing to discuss a plea agreement in the case. The case will be back in court for a pretrial hearing April 18.

Jones, pastor of Dove World Outreach Ministries in Manatee County, said Tuesday he remains steadfast in his belief that the Polk County Sheriff’s Office targeted him on Sept. 11, when he was arrested within a few miles of the park. He maintains his First Amendment right to free speech was violated, and he said Tuesday he’s still considering legal action against the Sheriff’s Office.

But he said fighting the criminal allegations against him would take time and money, he’s more interested in pursuing his crusade against Islam.

We are looking to settle the situation in whatever way is to our best advantage,” he said. “Fighting it would take a lot more time, it takes more finances,” he said. “Everything we are doing is, of course, put on hold the longer we have to fight.”

As long as the deal is a good one, he said, it’s to his advantage to go ahead and take that so he can move on with his plans.

Jones said he has no fear of returning to Polk County in September because he now knows he will be targeted, and he knows to stay within the letter of the law.

“We will be doing everything legally,” he said, “but we plan to continue to exercise our First Amendment rights.”

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Tuesday that Jones will have nothing to worry about if returns to this county and obeys the law.

“But if he comes to Polk County and violates the law,” he said, “then I have a place for him at the Polk County Jail.”

  1. If Muslims, burned a Bible somewhere, you probably wouldn’t see riots or revenge killings in different parts of the world.

But, this guy is crazy. Nothing good can come of it, and he’s just putting more people in danger. He’s a disgrace.

And it won’t be Jones’ fault. It will be the fault of the rioters and the Islamist ‘holy men’ that stir them up.

(But it will distract attention from Jones’ intended purpose to bring attention to Yousef Nadarkhani, which is why it is an ‘ineffective’ tactic. Again, Jones has good intent, unfortunate execution.)

  6. Simple, you don’t judge non-Christians by Christian standards. You can judge them however by the international rule of law. There’s no point in judging them according to the Bible when they don’t believe in it. (Like telling an atheist not to sleep around because the Bible says so).

I’m also not going to judge another religion when mine is full of evil acts sometimes worse than the ones you mention. As Christians we have to face up to our own past and why we acted the way we did. As a Christian I’m concerned with how Christians treat each other. That does not mean that I believe Islam is the way to God and it is clearly responsible for many atrocities upon others and Muslims themselves.

Their behaviour does show the dangers of fundamentalism. Whether Jewish, Christian, Muslim, atheist, whatever. Where those who are intolerant of those who believe differently to you are seen as evil. From that belief it’s not far to go to getting rid of the evil – the heathen, the infidel, the heretic. They are no longer children of God for whom Jesus died and in need of redemption and God’s grace but spawns of Satan.

As I said in an earlier thread, if we don’t learn from history we are doomed to repeat it. Jesus must weep for the behaviour of Christians who have committed atrocities in His Name. But after 2000 years, have Christians finally got Jesus message to love God, love your neighbour, love yourself. Apparently not!

(Consider that in the 90s the most Christian country in Africa was Rwanda. 90% were considered Christian before the genocide. In the genocide 800 000 people were slaughtered. Grown men who attended church regularly picked up machetes and killed entire families including children)

  7. You don’t judge muslim behaviour becuase they don’t know Jesus. I can’t believe what an ignorant statement that is. So a Muslim can rape little children stone teenage girls but you can’t judge them. Gee you have a great grasp of the Bible and common sense.

  8. Christians who act like morons deserve to be knocked. I dare the good pastor to make his statement in Pakistan or Iran instead of the safety of the US. The consequences of his actions, of inciting hatred of Westerners and Christians, of blood shed, are there to be seen. No doubt you think he is a great witness of the Gospel sitting behind your keyboard. I have family in the ADF in Afghanistan who have to put up with the consequences of this wanker.

I’m not judging Muslim behaviour when they don’t know Jesus. I will judge the behaviour of those who claim to be Christians. Your argument is if they do it then Christians can do it too.

I am not against Jews (read the frickin Talmud yourself – it’s their words) nor anti (which you clearly are) or pro-Muslim, merely pointing out the hypocrisy that exists. I suppose I should fear for my son when his Muslim friend plays with him.

What a pathetic anti Jewish rant which has got nothing to for with the subject. Why do you always find a way to knock christians? How many times do we see muslims who have done the most evil horrific things get away with their garbage yet you attack this one pastor.
It is the sick wacko muslims who are to blame who are intolerant of everyone else. How many Bibles have they burnt and worse how many christians do they kill every year.

  10. Well I hope he’s proud of himself now that he’s made his point. Of course he knows he’d be fairly safe in the good ol USA. Too bad for those Westerners and Christians in Muslim countries though.

I’m amazed at how many Evangelical Christians support Jewish Zionism. I bet he won’t burn the Jewish Talmud even though it says the following of Jesus (who is at this moment in hell boiling in hot semen!) and Christians.

“The ultimate object of hatred in Talmudic Judaism is Christ, and the targets of Talmudic hatred are not just Gentile non-Jews, “the people who are like an ass slaves who are considered the property of the master” (Talmud, Kethuboth 111a). Of these non-Jews, the Christians are most insanely hated and loathed because their doctrines are the opposite of every Talmudic doctrine. They rank not just as animals, like the rest of non-Talmudic humanity, but almost as vermin, to be eradicated. Language in the Talmud is virtually exhausted to find foul and hated names for Christians.

Jesus in hell where His punishment is “boiling in hot semen.” (Talmud, Gittin 57a; Exhibit 202) The subject is identified as Jesus in a footnote, also in the Jewish Encyclopedia under “Balaam.” (Exhibit 275)

Christians in hell (in the above passage) are punished by “boiling hot excrement” which is the punishment for all who mock “at the words of the sages” (i.e. the Talmud).

Jesus “committed bestiality,” “corrupted the people,” is “turned into hell.” (Talmud Sanhedrin 105a; Exhibit 106 and Exhibit 107)

Jesus “limped on one foot” and “was blind in one eye,” “he practiced enchantment by means of his membrum,” “he committed bestiality with his ass,” he was a fool who “did not even know his beast’s mind.” (Talmud, Sanhedrin l05a-105b; Exhibit 108 and 109) The ridiculous and foul misuse of Judges 5:27 about Sisera’s dying convulsions meaning sexual intercourse is here applied to Jesus, with a footnote “explanation” of Judges 5:27: “This is taken to mean sexual intercourse”

Jesus attempts to seduce women, is excommunicated by a rabbi and then worships a brick, was a seducer of Israel, and practiced magic. (Talmud, Sanhedrin l07b; Exhibit 117), also the Jewish Encyclopedia (See Exhibit 277).”

  19. hi, i’m a Muslim girl, and i’m proud to be one. this pastor, even if he does not believe in Islam, has no right what so ever to burn the quran. what will he gain? just because of the laws of Saudi arbia or the actions of other Muslims does not necessarily mean that that’s what Islam is all about. if so then by this pastor’s actions i could say that being a Christian is about ignorance, because this actions prove ignorance. But it is not. just because you don’t believe in something does not mean it’s from the devil. in the QURAN, one of the passages says : “YOU HAVE YOU’RE RELIGION AND I HAVE MINE”. the difference between Islam and Christyna is that we believe that god took Jesus with him and did not leave him to die and we believe in prophet Muhammad (صلى اله عليه و سلم) who spread Islam over the world. and it was proved that this prophet is mentioned in the bible, except that there were some,a long time ago who tore that page and buried it so that there would not be any Islam.
If this pastor burns the Quran on September 11, especially since it’s Ramadan, a sacred time for Muslims, he won’t be stopping the devil, he will simply obey him and become him. he has no right to do this. and i guarantee, if he does,he won’t get away with it, in this lifetime, or the next.
for those who follow him, i hope Allah has mercy on you, and for those who don’t, GOD BLESS YOU.

  20. @Imran:
You should quote the whole verse:
“”On that account: We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone slew a person – unless it be in retaliation for murder or for spreading mischief in the land – it would be as if he slew all mankind: and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all humanity.” Quran, 5,32

This clearly shows that Muslims feel no allegiance towards this verse since it’s message is only valid for Jews.
Actually, the verse tells Jews (especially those living under muslim rulers) that to resist their muslim overlords or to kill one of them is an extremely severe crime.

Also there is clear evidence that Islam not only allows but even calls for the killing of non-believers and I can call all four schools of islamic jurisdiction as witness. This is related to those that are called apostates from Islam, following a hadith where Muhammad is quoted saying that “Whosoever changes his religion (from Islam to anything else), bring end to his life.”

It is also not good quoting Verses from the Jewish Thora, because since the covenant with Israel was with a secular as well as with a spritual society/community it must contain many rules that deal with defending the faith as well as with defending that visible society. But the covenant made by Jesus Christ does not call for such a thing. If my kingdom would be like those in this world my disciples would take arms and fight for it, so He said, stating clearly that he didn’t call for such a kind of kingsom.

If he was smart, he would have waited for the completion of the mosque and then burnt it down. That would make him more famous as an extremist then this stunt. And then he could have represented the church as they go into civil war against Islam in America. And Islam would start burning churches. And atheists will defend and their gay rights as they try to prove both sides wrong… I’m simply shaking my head.

I can actually see this happening in America. It is becoming so divided. How much longer can America stand?

  26. IT is simply a SALES PITCH.. Gainesville church’s 20 acre property is up for sale with an asking price of $4 million….
    FEW FACTS ABOUT TERRY JONES:
The church is facing serious accusations of financial irregularities and it is offered for sale. The church accepts donations and is exempt from taxes, while the senior pastors Terry and his wife, Sylvia Jones, own a for-profit enterprise.

According to Gainesville Sun, former church members who have worshiped under senior pastors Terry and Sylvia Jones are speaking out about what they describe as financial abuses at the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville and its sister church in Cologne, Germany, founded by Terry Jones in 1981 and closed in 2008.

The paper says that by all accounts – the church’s Web site, interviews with current and former members and Terry Jones’ own description – the church in Gainesville, as was the one in Germany, is structured with a for-profit business operating out of tax-exempt church property, using the unpaid labor of church members to maintain a steady stream of merchandise for sale online.

That structure has raised questions with the Alachua County Property Appraiser’s Office, which has said it will investigate the church’s tax-exempt status. The value of the land and buildings located at the Dove World Outreach Center, 5805 N.W. 37th St., is assessed at $1.6 million and is wholly exempt from taxes.

Interestingly, entwined with the church’s message is a theme stressing obedience to senior pastors and work for the Kingdom of God – a theme that persuaded one couple from Germany to work full time and uncompensated for Terry and Sylvia Jones’ business, TS and Company. The business sells vintage furniture on eBay.

The church also has an Academy in Gainesville known as the Dove World Outreach Academy. Outside contact, even with family for weddings and funerals, is prohibited for students who attend the Academy. Its members live on property owned by TS and Company, work in the selling, packing and shipping of furniture and are unpaid.

Terry Jones’ daughter, Emma Jones, who still lives in Cologne after breaking with her parents and the church, said TS and Company, which first was established in Germany in 2004 by Terry and Sylvia Jones, fed the private coffers of her father and stepmother in Cologne.

Emma Jones and Heinz Koop – a former church elder in Germany – say church members confronted Terry and Sylvia Jones with an itemized list of alleged abuses such as a car purchased by the church for their son, salaries paid by the church for TS and Company employees and donated furniture that was sold for profit.

  30. I’ve done wuite an extensive study on Romans. Romans 1 represents a polemic world view of the Jews. The whole flavour of the letter keeps lumping each group, both gentile and Jew as sinner needing salvation for all have fallen. He keeps putting both sides in the same basket of sin – and then explains how all those that are now the same are made together righteous through the work of Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

What Paul does in the opening letter is rather nasty. With this polemic generalized Jewish view he automatically won the respect of the Jews (remember his letters are read out to the churches). So the Jews would have puffed out their chests, glared at the gentiles as Paul’s ‘views’ were being read out, them agreeing with his views that gentiles are mere homosexual pagans, gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless, blind, immoral and unclean.

This does not sound the views of Paul normally. But it does sound like him if you see what he does after representing this polemic view of the Jews in the Roman congregation.

Paul says this at the start of the next chapter:

Rom 2:1 THEREFORE YOU have no excuse or defense or justification, O man, whoever you are who judges and condemns another. For in posing as judge and passing sentence on another, you condemn yourself, because you who judge are habitually practicing the very same things.

Talk about a slap in the face to his Jewish brothers! I have trouble saying chapter 1 represents the views of Paul. Yes. It is written by the Holy Spirit – but to stress the message of Paul from Romans 2:1 onwards.

We Christians should not burn Qurans. To do so is way too disrespectful. We are to treat others as we would like to be treated. So, this group is disobeying the teaching of Christ by treating others with such disrespect, and encouraging hatred in the process. Christ loves Muslims no less than He loves us, and we need to act accordingly.

For those Muslims who have just read this blog for the first time – know that its a blog that usually points out problems with parts of the Christian church, and most Christians who regularly read this blog, would not agree with what that extreme group is doing. A Muslim man tried to convert my father and my father said he wasn’t interested because he said to the Muslim man ‘Your God wants me dead’. To prove my dad wrong, the Muslim man bought in resources to convince my dad likewise and in the first few sentences of one resource, my dad highlighted a sentence that those who don’t convert to Islam must die. Th Muslim was shocked to see it.

In the Quran, Muslim’s are instructed to curse and pray against Christians and what I’ve read so far, the way evangelism works is by the sword. Muslim friends at work are open about their faith and can’t wait for Jesus to come again to judge and kill the Jews.

It’s odd since in the Quran, I’ve read that they say Jesus is Messiah, perfect, born of virgin, risen to heaven to be beside ‘Allah’ and blessed the disciples.

When the LORD your God brings you into the land you are about to enter and occupy, he will clear away many nations ahead of you: the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. These seven nations are all more powerful than you. When the LORD your God hands these nations over to you and you conquer them, you must completely destroy them. Make no treaties with them and show them no mercy. Do not intermarry with them, and don’t let your daughters and sons marry their sons and daughters. They will lead your young people away from me to worship other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and he will destroy you. (Deuteronomy 7:1-4 NLT)

“Go up, my warriors, against the land of Merathaim and against the people of Pekod. Yes, march against Babylon, the land of rebels, a land that I will judge! Pursue, kill, and completely destroy them, as I have commanded you,” says the LORD. “Let the battle cry be heard in the land, a shout of great destruction”. (Jeremiah 50:21-22 NLT)

“I will sweep away everything in all your land,” says the LORD. “I will sweep away both people and animals alike. Even the birds of the air and the fish in the sea will die. I will reduce the wicked to heaps of rubble, along with the rest of humanity,” says the LORD. “I will crush Judah and Jerusalem with my fist and destroy every last trace of their Baal worship. I will put an end to all the idolatrous priests, so that even the memory of them will disappear. For they go up to their roofs and bow to the sun, moon, and stars. They claim to follow the LORD, but then they worship Molech, too. So now I will destroy them! And I will destroy those who used to worship me but now no longer do. They no longer ask for the LORD’s guidance or seek my blessings.” (Zephaniah 1:2-6 NLT)
