“One of Pope Francis’s closest advisers says Cardinal George Pell’s position is “untenable”.
Peter Saunders was hand-picked by the Pope six months ago to be the Catholic Church’s commissioner for the protection of children.
Cardinal Pell has been under fire since allegations that he turned a blind eye to abuse resurfaced last week at the royal commission into child abuse in Ballarat.
“He is making a mockery of the Pope himself, but most of all of the victims and the survivors,” Mr Saunders told the Nine Network’s 60 Minutes.
“More importantly, anybody who is a serious obstacle to the work of the commission and to the work of the Pope in trying to clean up the church’s act over this matter needs to be taken aside very quickly and removed from any kind of position of influence.”
Cardinal Pell, a former archbishop of Sydney and Melbourne was last year appointed to be Prefect of the Secretariat for the Economy at the Vatican.
Victims called on Cardinal Pell last week to front the royal commission following several claims he offered bribes or ignored warnings about Australia’s worst pedophile priest, Gerald Ridsdale. Cardinal Pell said he would co-operate with the investigations and would attend the hearings if he was asked to do so.”

I must say this would be very unusual for any organisation. For someone appointed by the top guy to be saying scathing things about a powerful person in the organisation and not be taken down.
Maybe Pell is on his way out – he got a few brownie points for finding a lost few million in the Vatican bank but then lost the brownie points by spending some of the money on himself. Perhaps they feel that Pell is going down over this abuse scandal and they better distance themselves before it happens.

He’s said some scathing things about Pell since and I would say he already has discussed it with the Pope.

Because the Pope and the Queen and the President should always be on hand for a 60 minutes interview?

I am not at all being defensive of GP – he has much to answer for.
However, I do not understand why “one of the Pope’s closest advisers” has to discuss this with 60 Minutes and not the Pope himself.
